Overview
As a Social Sciences major, you’ll take courses from Mount Saint Mary College's Psychology, Sociology, and History majors, concentrating in one of the three and taking three courses in each of the other two subjects. If you are taking on the Social Sciences major with a certification in Childhood Education, you must choose to concentrate in History.
As with all of our majors in the Division of Social Sciences, you’ll have numerous opportunities to participate in research (even paid one-on-one research with a professor over the summer!), field trips to local Hudson Valley history havens, and giving back to the community.
About the programme
- Best of all: You don’t have to choose. By combining these three programs, you’ll be well-equipped to work with people in a variety of settings, understanding their needs from a mental, emotional, and societal perspective.
- Educating others: Pairing our Social Sciences major with certification in Childhood Education offers you the opportunity for valuable additional training in psychology, which is so helpful for future educators.
- Flexibility: With Social Sciences, your degree is up to you. After fulfilling prerequisites, you can take courses in any order you’d like, and your selections are based on your interests. Make this degree your own!
Careers
While internships are not required for Social Sciences majors, they are highly encouraged to get the full experience of your future! You can choose to complete an internship related to any of the three concentration areas, and the Mount’s Center for Academic and Career Services can help you find the perfect fit.
Many of our Social Sciences alumni go on to be teachers, while others go on to graduate school in counseling, history, and law. If you want to head right into a career, Social Sciences is a great foundation for government and political work as well as community services, museum/archival work, and law enforcement.
