The Department of Psychology at Shepherd University facilitates student learning of core psychological knowledge, skills, and values and supports students’ career aspirations and academic goals through quality teaching, mentoring, and advising. Through service and research, the department encourages meaningful faculty and student participation in the community.


Shepherd University offers a program in psychology leading to the bachelor of arts degree.

The purpose of the psychology program includes the following:

  • To expose the student to the nature of scientific explanation and scientific research within psychology as well as to provide a conceptual framework for understanding human behavior.
  • To provide, for the qualified student, actual experience in career settings involving research or service work within psychology, or a combination of these (this is accomplished through the practicum, faculty-led research, and cooperative education programs).
  • To contribute to the preparation of the student for admission to graduate school and to schools offering advanced professional certification.

      The IELTS – or the International English Language Test System – tests your English-language abilities (writing, listening, speaking, and reading) on a scale of 1.00–9.00.     Academic Requirements

    You need the following GPA score:

    Applicants for graduate programs must have the equivalent of a bachelor’s degree with a minimum GPA equivalent to 2 on a US 4.0 grading scale. Admitted applicants typically have an undergraduate GPA of or better on a 4.0 scale. No exam grade should be lower than 4.5 (European grade scale) or D (American grade scale).

    Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated using the grades that you received in each course, and is determined by the points assigned to each grade (e.g. for the US grading scale from A-F).

    Admission requirements:

    • Complete the application for admission.
    • Submit the $45 application fee or an approved application fee waiver.
    • Send an official high school transcript or GED to Shepherd.
    • Send your SAT or ACT scores.
    • It is recommended that you submit a personal statement with your application. Personal statements can be typed into the online application, mailed, or emailed.
