The Department of Music at Shepherd University strives to inspire student growth creatively, artistically, and professionally by providing a climate conducive to the development of the comprehensive musician. This is achieved through a highly personalized and student-centered approach for the development of a unified core of musical experiences. 

About

Toward this end, the program is designed:

  • To develop performance and/or compositional skills exhibiting artistic integrity and competence;
  • To foster music ensembles which demonstrate the highest standards in artistic excellence;
  • To foster student inquiry, interaction, and self-discovery;
  • To provide a strong foundation for future graduate music study;
  • To train students seeking public school music careers according to approved standards of teacher education;
  • To develop student capacity to communicate music and its role in society to others;
  • To develop artistic sense of the general student in terms of musical understanding, appreciation, and perception;
  • To provide avocational opportunities for interested students through participation in various music ensembles and other music activities; and
  • To enhance the image of the School of the Arts and Humanities, the Department of Music, and the University by serving as a hub of artistic activity for the community.

    The IELTS – or the International English Language Test System – tests your English-language abilities (writing, listening, speaking, and reading) on a scale of 1.00–9.00. Academic Requirements

You need the following GPA score:

Required score: 2

Applicants for graduate programs must have the equivalent of a bachelor’s degree with a minimum GPA equivalent to 2 on a US 4.0 grading scale. Admitted applicants typically have an undergraduate GPA of or better on a 4.0 scale. No exam grade should be lower than 4.5 (European grade scale) or D (American grade scale).

Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated using the grades that you received in each course, and is determined by the points assigned to each grade (e.g. for the US grading scale from A-F).

Admission requirements:

  • Complete the application for admission.
  • Submit the $45 application fee or an approved application fee waiver.
  • Send an official high school transcript or GED to Shepherd.
  • Send your SAT or ACT scores.
  • It is recommended that you submit a personal statement with your application. Personal statements can be typed into the online application, mailed, or emailed.
