Overview

The Liberal Arts Studies major offered by Lynchburg College is designed to hone the student’s diverse interests not only for a professional or graduate career in a competitive global market but also for contributing to a sustainable world as a thoughtful, civic-minded and conscientious citizen.

What Will I Study?

You may pursue one of two major options (following a declaration of the major prior to completing 60 credit hours of coursework):

  • Self-designed/Individualized Multidisciplinary Studies Option: For highly motivated and self-disciplined students (GPA of 3.2 and above). Admission to the major is only with permission of the head of the Liberal Arts Studies program and the faculty committee.
  • Thematic Option: For students who have structured thematic concentrations. You will take courses listed under each structural concentration, including 6 credit hours of a pre-capstone and capstone.

Employers in the private and public sectors, in government, non-profit and for-profit sectors seek employees who are both broadly trained to survey and synthesize a broad range of issues and who have in-depth critical thinking and analytical skills for problem-solving, employees who are flexible in their thinking and who have oral and written communication skills. This major can prepare you for a wide variety of professional and graduate careers.

Academic Requirements

You need the following GPA score:

Required score: 3.2

Applicants for graduate programs must have the equivalent of a bachelor’s degree with a minimum GPA equivalent to 3.2 on a US 4.0 grading scale. Admitted applicants typically have an undergraduate GPA of or better on a 4.0 scale. No exam grade should be lower than 4.5 (European grade scale) or D (American grade scale).

Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated using the grades that you received in each course, and is determined by the points assigned to each grade (e.g. for the US grading scale from A-F).
