Speech-language pathologists help people of all ages develop or regain the ability to speak, read, write and think clearly.
Maryville’s state-of-the-art facilities offer some of the best speech and language therapy resources in the region, and you’ll be eligible to apply for a state SLP-A license, which allows you to work in a limited capacity under the supervision of a fully certified and licensed speech-language pathologist.
Program Objectives
Objectives of the Communication Sciences and Disorders program at Maryville University:
- Familiarize students with normal and disordered communication across the life span with respect for cultural difference.
- Introduce students to the basic principles and methods of prevention, assessment, and intervention for people with communication and swallowing disorders.
- Foster in students an appreciation and understanding for the human need to communicate.
- Acquaint students with professional credentials and procedures for obtaining them.
- Develop student objectivity, integrity, and ethical conduct in academic, clinical, and research endeavors.
- Cultivate student collaboration with faculty and peers while exploring topics of interest.
- Instill in students the importance of life-long learning, diversity, and service to others.
- Improve students’ communication skills in reading, writing, speaking and listening.
- Introduce the concept of higher order thinking to students: disciplined inquiry, logical and critical analysis, creative interpretation, and evaluation principles; incorporating diverse perspectives.
- Advance student understanding and adaptation of current and evolving technologies as tools for expression of learning.
- Promote student appreciation for diversity of the human condition and the varied creative achievements of human experiences, in preparation for thriving in a global community.
- Encourage student leadership and participation in local, national, and global communities; to serve others and strengthen communities.

General requirements
International students must submit the following:
- Application for admission.
- Current Passport
- Official course-by-course transcript evaluation with GPA calculation from a NACES member evaluation service (naces.org) for all secondary transcripts outside the U.S. or Canda.
- Students mid-program should send the official in-progress course-by-course evaluation to Maryville. Upon graduation from secondary school, the final official transcript and/or diploma should be sent directly to Maryville.
- Proof of English proficiency. See below for requirements.
- Any other documentation required by a specific Maryville academic program.
