The Photography and Media BFA track at California Institute of the Arts CalArts is designed to challenge conventional notions of image and art, encourage experimentation with materials and ideas, and build each artist’s sense of the context and personal importance of their work. 

Overview

The Photography and Media curriculum ais distinguished by its commitment to an evolving suite of technical courses that address continuing shifts in image-making toolsets and theoretical coursework that interrogates the condition of the image, authorship and medium in a contemporary, local and globalized world.

  • In addition to CalArts' rich and diverse community and naturally collaborative atmosphere, the Institute provides several programs of study that can be pursued concurrently with a student's chosen metier.

Programme Structure

  • Mentors and program faculty provide continuous guidance and collegial artistic advice throughout the BFA Program as students develop the musical skills and creative voice they need to excel as professional lens-based artists after finishing at CalArts.
  • In addition to fulfilling the requirements of the BFA Core Curriculum, BFA Photography and Media students are required to pass a Graduation Review in order to complete the Program.

  • Submit Your Application and Portfolio
  • All transcripts should be uploaded to the application directly on the Academic History section prior to submitting. Applicants should plan ahead and request transcripts as soon as they decide to apply to CalArts.
  • Two letters of recommendation are required for BFA programs. At least one recommendation should be written by a person who understands your artistic work. Many MFA programs require three letters of recommendation (please see program-specific requirements in the portfolio/audition section).
