About

SUNY Oneonta College English majors are uniquely well-prepared to contribute to an expanding global culture. The English Department recently expanded its offerings in ethnic studies, environmental writing, world literature and contemporary criticism.

Overview

As an English major at SUNY Oneonta College, you'll join a vibrant literary community with a variety of opportunities to create, analyze and discuss. In addition to the annual Common Read, which culminates in a lecture by a distinguished author, SUNY Oneonta hosts award-winning poets and writers each semester through the Red Dragon Reading Series. The Creative Writing Club holds workshops and hosts guest speakers, and the Art & Scope literary magazine features creative writing by students.

Opportunities

You may also have the opportunity to present and discuss scholarly work with peers from other colleges and universities at the annual New Critics Undergraduate Literary and Composition Conference, which is organized by the English Department and members of Parnassus: The English Club.

Every other summer, the college hosts the James & Susan Fenimore Cooper Conference & Seminar and the John Burroughs Nature Writing Conference & Seminar, where student participants can interact with scholars from all over the country.
