The Elementary Education program at Doane University prepares students to teach kindergarten through eighth-grade. A range of field experiences in your sophomore and junior years will help you decide which grade level you would most like to teach.

To become a successful elementary school teacher and shape the future of our youth, you need the support of a valuable elementary education program.

Students in the Elementary Education program at Doane University must also complete a major or endorsement in middle grades, early childhood, special education, English as a Second Language, Spanish, music, mathematics, science and/or physical education. A coaching endorsement may be added.

Teachers can also be certified for kindergarten through 12th-grade in art, music, physical education, and English as a Second Language.

The Elementary Education program at Doane University is known nationwide for its innovative, performance-based approach to teacher education based on a quality model of theory and developmental experiences.

Field Experience/Student Teaching

At Doane, pre-service teachers complete approximately 300 hours of practicum experience with K-12 students prior to student teaching.

Academic Requirements

You need the following GPA score:

Applicants for graduate programs must have the equivalent of a bachelor’s degree with a minimum GPA equivalent to 3 on a US 4.0 grading scale. Admitted applicants typically have an undergraduate GPA of or better on a 4.0 scale. No exam grade should be lower than 4.5 (European grade scale) or D (American grade scale).

Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated using the grades that you received in each course, and is determined by the points assigned to each grade (e.g. for the US grading scale from A-F).
