Overview
Why Edinboro stands out
When you enroll in the Early Childhood and Deaf Education program of Pennsylvania Western University, you'll follow a groundbreaking path of coursework that combines established teacher training and shared resources in early childhood education, special education, and communication sciences and disorders while meeting Pennsylvania Department of Education competencies.
Built upon our regionally recognized Deaf Studies minor, this program uses enhanced educational training to expand the focus on students who are deaf and hard of hearing.
You'll learn the basics of audiology, American Sign Language and deaf culture, how to manage inclusive educational environments, as well as strategies, assessment, and literacy instruction for students who are deaf. You'll also get hands-on field experiences, like the preschool in Butterfield Hall run by the Western Pennsylvania School for the Deaf.
When it's time to graduate, you will have the skills and experience to take both the Early Childhood PA Certification Exam for PreK-Grade 4 and the Deaf/Hard of Hearing PA Certification Exam for Birth to Grade 12. You'll earn two certifications in just four years and be among the first in Pennsylvania to earn this valuable degree.
How Edinboro supports you
At Edinboro, you'll learn from faculty who are experienced teachers of the deaf. They bring real-world and best practices together to create a dynamic and relevant learning environment built on their passions for teaching, research and scholarship.
Because you will have many opportunities to interact with students and gain more teaching experience, you will meet state-required competencies sooner than most master's degree level programs.
By becoming a member of a professional organization such as Council for Exceptional Children, Student Pennsylvania State Education Association, Early Childhood Club, American Sign Language Club, or the Kappa Delta Pi Honors Fraternity, you will develop a strong network of like-minded professionals.
You will also be able to expand your knowledge with a minor in Special Education or Dyslexia with a few additional courses.
