You'll have the opportunity to learn from faculty members who are widely published and award-winning writers.


In the English - Writing program of Washburn University you'll take courses to learn the basics in writing poetry, fiction and non-fiction, as well as have the opportunity to take advanced courses in each of those writing styles. You'll also take several courses in literature to further your knowledge of and exposure to different styles of literature. There are more specialized courses, including journalism, playwriting, and short stories, you can choose between based upon your own interests.

The ability to write well is critical if you want to continue your education by getting an advanced degree. Some undergraduate English majors go on to law school or graduate school, where their writing and critical thinking skills are well-used in their studies.

English Language Requirements

    The TOEFL iBT ® measures your English-language abilities in an academic setting. The test has four sections (reading, listening, speaking, and writing), each with a score range of 0-30, for a total score range of 0-120.

    The IELTS – or the International English Language Test System – tests your English-language abilities (writing, listening, speaking, and reading) on a scale of 1.00–9.00.     PTE Academic (Pearson Test of English Academic) is a language test that enables students to demonstrate their writing, listening, speaking, and reading skills when applying to study in English. Delivered and marked by computer, it reports on a scale between 10 and 90.
