Overview

Students who major in the Literature program of Eckerd College work closely with literary texts, developing competencies in analysis, interpretation, imaginative and critical thinking, and research. At the same time, they are regularly challenged to hone their skills in reading, writing, speaking, and discussion. Many successfully pursue double majors or minors in closely related disciplines such as Classics, Philosophy, Religious Studies, Creative Writing, and Theater, and go on to graduate, professional, and law schools as well as to a wide variety of careers.

Careers in Literature

Our graduates have pursued many career paths, from business to law to education. Some have gone into publishing, journalism, and marketing. Some are now professors at other institutions. Some have changed fields entirely, going to graduate school in other areas or entering businesses far afield from literature.

How is this possible? Because our graduates are good learners, confident in their abilities to read and understand texts, to write about complex topics, and to research anything from Chaucer criticism to cyber sources on the web. The skills that an EC literature graduate gains are readily transferable to other areas.
