The objectives of the Department of Music from Jackson State University are as follows: 

  • To offer curricula in music on various levels appropriate to the needs of the students. 
  • To prepare effective teachers and proficient performers of music in general, vocal, keyboard, and instrumental areas. 
  • To broaden the scope of study and learning in music with particular reference to various idioms, styles, media, careers, and methodologies.
  • To provide basic and specific opportunities for the musical development of students pursuing study in major fields other than music.

Candidates for the Baccalaureate Degree in Music Education at Jackson State University are required to complete a minimum of 130 hours including clinical internship of 12 hours. Students who complete this program are fully qualified for the Class “A” licensure of the Mississippi Department of Education to teach music (K-12) instrumental or vocal.

  • Application: A completed application
  • Transcripts: Prospective students should request that their high school send a transcript.  A six or seven semester transcript can be submitted for early review and a final official transcript submitted upon graduation which lists all high school course work, the date of graduation, grade point average, and class rank.
  • Test Scores:  Request that an official ACT or SAT score(s) is sent to Jackson State University.
  • Immunization Record: All students born after December 31, 1956 must submit proof of immunization compliance for measles, mumps, and rubella.
