The mission of Therapeutic Recreation and Leisure Studies  (TRLS) program at Southern University and A&M College is to advance academic, professional knowledge and skills of students in both undergraduate and graduate programs. This is accomplished by conducting best practices, adhering to national accreditation and standards, and establishing a creative learning environment. Students are encouraged to pursue lifelong learning and professional development to be able to serve a diverse and ever changing global society.

General requirements

  • Admission to the Bachelor of Science degree in Recreational Therapy and Leisure Studies requires the completion of an application for new majors in the department. 
  • The Recreational Therapy application process includes the development of a strategic plan for undergraduates studies, submission of a reflective essay, "Why I chose this profession" and a pre-acknowledgment assessment. 
  • The strategic plan covers an overview of recreation therapy, review of the student's transcript, development of a plan to complete the degree, review of the requirements, specifically 560 hours of internship with a 14-17 week period.
