Overview

At all levels of instruction--from first-year composition through graduate classes--the Department of English establishes a firm foundation for students to begin their exploration of the world and, for English majors, builds on that foundation with opportunities to enrich their cultural and intellectual lives through classes that emphasize deep analysis, careful research, and rigorous writing across several fields including the study of literature, creative writing, and professional writing.

The Department of English at Jacksonville State University both serves the needs of the University and strives to become a destination department for those students whose personal goals and intellectual curiosity align with the Department’s mission.

What Can I Do with an English Major?

If you major in English, you’re going to be . . . anything you want.

That’s right. Rather than preparing for one, set career, you’re developing a broad, valuable skillset that will prepare you for many, many careers and open all kinds of doors for you.

As you plan your English major and future career, be strategic with your minor. For example, if you aspire to a political career as a speechwriter, then you’ll probably want to minor in Political Science, Public Administration, or History.

Lastly, some careers require higher degrees. If you want to be an attorney, law school is in your future. Or, if you want to be an English professor, you’ll need a Ph.D. So, also be sure to do more research and talk to your advisor about potential career paths.

There is a $50 non-refundable fee that must be paid by credit card when you submit this application.

High school GPA of 2.0/4.0 (US grading scale).
Copy of Passport.
Copy of financial document (financial statement and letter) stating a balance of at least $37,500.
If credentials are in a language other than English they must be translated by the institution itself or approved translation services.
At least one standardized test score such as ACT/SAT/ TOEFL/ IELTS/iTEP/PTE/Duolingo.
Proof of English Proficiency. (In addition to TOEFL/IELTS/iTEP/PTE/Duolingo, the ACT/SAT can satisfy proof of english proficiency requirement)
