Overview
The purpose of this program is to involve students in a direct and sustained study of the complex of moral and practical considerations, quandaries, and disputes that arise at the intersection of these disciplines. The program and the associated major study the many ways that politics, principles, and economics interact in the formation of policy choices and resulting outcomes. The impact of political and economic choices on the prosperity and well-being of citizens, particularly distributional consequences, remains critical in every society.
The Philosophy, Politics and Economics major at Rhodes College entails the study of the important works which laid the foundations of economic and political systems throughout the world and the major critiques of those systems. We promote research and education by offering courses and conducting academic research (both faculty and student research as well as faculty-student research) in the study of PPE, the history of economic thought, and the moral and political foundations of society.
The program fosters the study of the following issues from an interdisciplinary perspective:
- Justification and distribution of private property and its role in the economy and society objectives, foundations, and consequences of capitalist versus socialist, and authoritative versus market economic systems
- Democratic versus authoritarian political systems
- The role of the individual and the state in developing policies and institutions that affect unemployment, inflation, trade and payment deficits, health
