About

The Music - Performance program at Stephen F. Austin State University is uniquely designed to allow a student to develop specialized technical skills and knowledge for an instrument or voice.

Overview

At Music - Performance program at Stephen F. Austin State University the student takes at least sixty-five percent of the required credits for this degree program in the major area and in other supportive courses in music. A significant portion of credit is given for applied lessons to compensate the student for the amount of practice time spent to intensely prepare for the weekly-applied lesson.

Learning outcomes

Individual performance skills are nurtured in weekly private lessons, studio classes, convocations, semester juried examinations, junior recitals and senior recitals. Students are required to participate in large and small ensembles; pianists participate in the accompanying options available.

General requirements

  • Complete an accredited high school program.
  • Freshman applicants who do not meet automatic admission based on high school rank will be reviewed through a holistic file review process, which considers all information submitted as part of the application.
  • Submission of tests scores will not create any unfair advantage or disadvantage for those students who provide them. We still want to encourage students to take an upcoming ACT/SAT test score or submit an existing test score as the test scores may continue to be required and utilized for scholarship review.
