Overview

Students formally apply to the nursing department once all pre-nursing requirements have been met or nearly met. Students need 125 credit hours (60 in general education courses and 65 in nursing courses) to graduate the Bachelor of Nursing program of The University of Tampa.

In seven out of the past eight years, UT nursing students received an impressive 100% pass rate on the NCLEX-RN on the first try. UT is one of the few Florida schools to achieve this distinction. The 2019 national average of passage for first-time exam takers was about 88%. In Florida, the rate was about 72%.

Core Performance Standards

Critical thinking ability sufficient for clinical judgment and cognitive skills to acquire, assimilate, integrate and apply information.

Ability to communicate in English effectively/therapeutically with others in both verbal and written form.

Interpersonal skills sufficient to interact effectively with others from a variety of social, emotional, cultural and intellectual backgrounds.

Sufficient mobility to move from room to room, maneuver in small spaces and move freely and quickly to respond to emergencies and to perform physically taxing, repetitive tasks.

Gross and fine motor abilities sufficient to provide safe and effective nursing care.

Visual ability sufficient for observation and assessment necessary for safe effective nursing care.

Tactile ability sufficient for accurate physical assessment.

Mental/emotional stability to tolerate stressful experiential situations, adapt to changes, respond to the unexpected, maintain objectivity and recognize personal strengths and limitations.

Official transcripts of all secondary school coursework and grades translated in English.

Essay written in English.

A recommendation written by a counselor, teacher or headmaster.

English language proficiency scores.

International students also must furnish proof of available funds to cover their first year of study (including miscellaneous expenses) and each subsequent year.

Upon admission to the University and satisfactory completion of the financial statement, an I-20 form will be sent to applicants from UT’s admissions office.
