The distinguishing characteristics of the Social Work program of the Southeast Missouri State University are its: 1) emphasis on person-in-environment by considering various aspects of an individual’s environment (social, political, familial, temporal, spiritual, economic and physical), 2) focus on strengths (as opposed to shortcomings), and 3) steadfast commitment to social justice in the service of empowering individuals, families and communities to meet their needs.

Social workers are employed in a variety of settings including mental health, child welfare, marriage and family, community organization, employee assistance, criminal justice/corrections, developmental disabilities, gerontology, health care, hospice, school social work, substance abuse and public welfare.

Social Work graduates work in a variety of settings. Examples of job titles include social worker, case manager, community organizer, human services specialist, rehabilitation case manager, community outreach worker, probation officer, eligibility worker, victim advocate and juvenile court liaison.
