Overview
The Philosophy programme from William Paterson University also prepares students for graduate studies and beyond.
Philosophy investigates many aspects of our thinking and experience. In classes such as ethics, logic, and aesthetics, philosophy examines procedures and standards, if there can be any, for proper behavior, thinking, and feeling. Metaphysics examines the nature of space and time and the conditions of experience.
Epistemology looks at how we know what we think that we know and the limits of knowledge. Many areas of our experience have separate philosophical inquiries dedicated to furthering our ability to discuss and understand them: language, art, education, religion, science, love, gender, mind, history, politics, law, and mathematics. Many famous thinkers have offered advice on how to pursue inquiry or catalogued the results of their own efforts, and the department offers regular seminars in the work of a single thinker, such as Plato, Aristotle, Spinoza, Kant, Nietzsche, Wittgenstein, among others.

General requirements
- To be enrolled as a freshman, you must have the equivalent of a U.S. high school diploma and have never attended a college or university. Admission for international students is based on a review of the appropriate educational documents as well as proficiency in English as measured by the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) or International English Testing System (IELTS).
- As part of the application process, you must have your international transcript evaluated into U.S. credits. Although it is not required for international students, we strongly recommend taking and submitting scores for the Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT) and/ or American College Test (ACT). To be considered for certain majors and/or merit scholarships, the SAT and/or ACT is required.
