Overview
This Liberal Studies programme combines interdisciplinary training in the arts, humanities, and social sciences, allowing students to design a flexible yet rigorous programme. The liberal studies major is ideal for those who seek a broad-based education and for pre-service teachers seeking certification in P-3, K-5, and 5-8 education.
All liberal studies majors must declare two tracks when signing up for the major. A track is like a minor. In fact, any minor in the College of Humanities and Social Sciences as can be chosen as a track. Liberal studies majors also complete a colloquium which introduces students to interdisciplinary, inquiry-based learning. It requires extensive engagement with reading material, substantial writing, library research, and use of instructional technology. Students complete the degree with a capstone course in which they select an individual research topic that synthesizes interests they have developed within their concentrations. Graduates of the liberal studies programme will become experts on their topics, and will also be able to teach their topics to their fellow students and to learn from responses to their topics.
