The Political Science program at Valparaiso University focuses on the values that humans should seek and the particular legal and structural organizations that allow people to realize their desired values.

The contemporary approach combines this concern for normative issues with particular attention given to scientific procedures, and empirical and quantitative methodology.

Students who choose the political science major can concentrate in three separate areas: general political science, legal studies, or public policy and public administration.

Experiential Learning

Valparaiso University offers many opportunities to explore the field of politics beyond the classroom. Coursework in political science is complemented with hands-on learning experiences through internships or the Community Research and Service Center. Beyond Valpo’s campus, students can choose to study in Washington, D.C. or at one of Valpo’s many overseas study centers.

Students in the political science and international relations department have become leaders in our campus community through organizations like the Student Senate, University Honors Council, and the Political Science Honors Society.
