Overview
The English degree at The University of Texas Rio Grande Valley, as a collaboration among the Department of Literatures and Cultural Studies, the Department of Writing and Language Studies, and the Creative Writing Program in the College of Fine Arts, supports culturally responsive pedagogy and community engagement. A student with an English major possesses skills in critical thinking, writing, and reading. English majors can enter professions such as teaching, writing, editing, media production, the law, public service, and advocacy, and they are prepared for continued graduate or professional study.
Key Features
- Students will analyze and interpret a variety of texts and patterns of language, using a range of theoretical approaches and disciplinary modes of inquiry.
- Students will demonstrate a broad and foundational knowledge of the traditions of American, British, Ethnic, and/or World literatures by critically situating specific works of literature within these traditions.
- Students will write coherently and demonstrate a consistent use of the conventions of a variety of genres, including, but not limited to, the academic essay.
- Students will apply appropriate research methodologies, including appropriate use of electronic media, to understand and/or illuminate specific questions about language and literature.
- Students in certification tracks will demonstrate knowledge and skills in the areas of writing, literature, reading, oral communication, media literacy, and English language arts pedagogy.

- You must submit a current copy of your valid passport to ensure that the spelling of your name is consistent on all non-immigrant and university documents.
- Submit Financial Documentation.
- If you have been offered a scholarship you will need to provide a copy of the award letter that includes a dollar amount of the scholarship.
- Mexican nationals may apply for the Mexican Tuition Waiver Form and provide all financial documentation that it requires. This benefit allows for eligible students to pay in-state tuition.
- For students who plan to attend on a visa status other than F-1 student status (TN, TD, H1-B, H-4, E1, E2, or other which allows you to study in the U.S.), proof of that valid status is required. Include copies of all immigration documents.
- If you have applied for U.S. Residency but have not yet received it, you must submit copies of your latest immigration documents.
