What does a geological engineer do?
As a graduate of the Geological Engineering program at South Dakota School of Mines and Technology, you might work in the areas of groundwater, environmental site planning and natural hazards, geomechanics and geotechnics, and fuels or minerals.
Job duties of a geological engineer might include:
- Assessing the quality of rock, soil, water and other site conditions
- Completing site analyses and foundation designs
- Assisting in the design of structures
- Conducting lab analyses of earth materials
- Assisting in the design of safe and efficient mines
- Delineating and extracting energy resources
- Modeling and protecting groundwater and surface water resources
- Mitigating against geologic hazards
- Providing solutions to problems related to land reclamation, water and air pollution, and sustainability

- Completed online application and the State of South Dakota application fee of $20.00.
- Academic credentials (translated into English). This includes high school transcripts and transcripts from ALL post-secondary institutions attended.
- English proficiency
- SAT or ACT scores - Math sub-scores should be a minimum of 520 on the SAT or 20 on the ACT. If the SAT or ACT is not readily available in your country, alternatives will be considered.
- Evaluation of academic credentials may be required- Check with the Ivanhoe International Center first before sending documents.
