The basic curriculum of the Computer Engineering program offered by South Dakota School of Mines & Technology includes required coursework in mathematics, basic sciences, humanities, social sciences, and fundamental engineering topics in circuit analysis, electronics, electrical systems, digital systems, assembly language, data structures, operating systems, and software engineering. Computer engineering students are required to select three senior elective courses from a wide variety of subject areas to fit their particular interests. Elective subject areas include digital signal processing, microprocessor-based system design, computer networks, and computer architecture. 

Student Internships & Jobs 

All SD Mines students are encouraged to have relevant work or research experience prior to graduation. Students in the Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering are sought by industry and government agencies performing real-world electrical and computer engineering. Students are strongly encouraged to apply for internship and co-op opportunities starting as early as the summer after their sophomore year, and the department offers help with the application process.

Academic Requirements

You need the following GPA score:

Required score: 2.75

Applicants for graduate programs must have the equivalent of a bachelor’s degree with a minimum GPA equivalent to 2.75 on a US 4.0 grading scale. Admitted applicants typically have an undergraduate GPA of or better on a 4.0 scale. No exam grade should be lower than 4.5 (European grade scale) or D (American grade scale).

Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated using the grades that you received in each course, and is determined by the points assigned to each grade (e.g. for the US grading scale from A-F).

  • SAT or ACT scores - Math sub-scores should be a minimum of 590 on the SAT or 25 on the ACT.
