Overview

The study of logic, ethics, or systems of morality, for example, prepares students for responsible and effective roles in a variety of life situations -- from the boardroom to the classroom. It's not surprising that students from our other schools often choose to take courses or to minor in the discipline.

What you will learn

With this Philosophy program at Ithaca College, you'll not only gain a broad knowledge of fundamental concepts, but you'll also develop your creative and critical skills and be challenged to articulate your own ideas through a dialectical process.

Programme Structure

Areas of Study:

Epistemology: the study of the nature of truth and knowledge.

Ethics: the study of moral right and wrong, both in theory and as applied to medicine, law, the environment, etc.

Logic: the study of reasoning and argumentation. (Note: the Law Scholastic Aptitude Test includes a section on logic.)

Metaphysics: rational inquiry into the nature of reality, with specific attention to questions regarding God, mind, matter, determinism, freedom of choice, and what a person is.

History of Philosophy: study of the writings of great philosophers such as Plato, Aristotle, René Descartes, Immanuel Kant, Friedrich Nietzsche, and Bertrand Russell.

The Financial Aid Application in IC Connect.

An official secondary school transcript that displays courses and grades for all years of secondary school attended. Applicants must also submit official leaving exam results and official transcripts from all colleges and/or universities attended, if applicable.

All documents written in a world language must be accompanied by a certified English translation. Please note that both documents are required—the original in your first language and the English translation.

A letter of recommendation is optional. If submitted, it must be from the principal, school head, or college counselor, sent directly from your school to Ithaca College.
