Framed broadly, the major includes transnational, hemispheric, oceanic, and global approaches, as well as the more traditional approach centered on the U.S. nation-state.

Coursework on a range of topics such as gender and sexuality, environmental studies, race and ethnicity, and political and social history, prepares students for careers in law, journalism, government, and business, as well as for more advanced study at the masters or doctoral level. Each year, we host influential scholars, writers, and artists working in the field, to share work and facilitate discussion of questions central to the field.

American Studies majors at Reed College think critically about the experiences and perspectives at stake in contested definitions of Americanness, building on the frameworks of a chosen home department––most commonly history, sociology, or literature––with courses on relevant materials in art, theater, music, anthropology, environmental studies, and religion.

Programme Structure

Requirements:

The student will fulfill the same departmental and divisional requirements as a regular divisional major with the same field of concentration. At least two courses the student takes in the field of concentration should focus on American subject matter.
In addition, the student will take a minimum of two units in American subject matter in each of two fields outside the field of concentration. For students whose field of concentration is not history, at least one of these outside fields must be history.
The student will take a junior qualifying exam designed by the American Studies Committee. This exam will be designed in consultation with the department corresponding to the student’s field of concentration.
All majors are expected to attend American studies colloquia and other events. There are approximately three to four colloquia each semester.
