Overview

The Department of Greek, Latin, and Ancient Mediterranean Studies (GLAM) is dedicated to the interdisciplinary study of the ancient Mediterranean world.

Through GLAM’s interdisciplinary curriculum, students develop critical thinking and writing skills, learn to work with different kinds of evidence, and consider different cultures by investigating people, places, texts, and objects that are at the same time both familiar to us and distant.

Reed College recognizes that the narrow canon of traditionally taught material, the ways in which that material has been studied and taught, and the uses to which that material has been put have been and continue to be complicit in structures of privilege, oppression, inequity, and exclusivity.

At Reed College through this Greek and Latin Language and Literature major we firmly believe that the study of the ancient Mediterranean and its culture is not the inheritance of any one group or any one part of the world, nor is it inherently unique or superior to other cultures.

Reed is actively working both to ensure that the curriculum and course materials interrogate and challenge the canon and to ensure that our department fosters an inclusive and equitable environment that is supportive of students of all identities, especially students from underrepresented and marginalized groups.
