Overview
Diagnostic medical sonography uses high frequency sound waves to create images of the body. Sonographers practice in a variety of specialties including obstetrics and gynecology, abdominal, breast, pediatrics, vascular, and musculoskeletal.
The Students who successfully complete the Diagnostic Medical Sonography program are awarded a Bachelor of Science in Medical Imaging degree with a concentration in diagnostic medical sonography from Regis College and are then eligible to sit for the national examinations offered by the American Registry for Diagnostic Medical Sonography.
Program Outcomes
The diagnostic medical sonography program will prepare competent entry-level sonographers in the cognitive (knowledge), psychomotor (skills), and affective (behavior) learning domains. Graduates will have a thorough understanding of sonography including physics and instrumentation, bio-effects, patient care, and standard examination protocol. Graduates will have demonstrated academic and clinical competencies to be eligible for the national certification exams.
- Demonstrate mastery of the didactic knowledge and clinical competencies in general sonography necessary to provide safe and effective medical care for patients.
- Employ critical thinking skills enabling the integration of pertinent patient data to demonstrate a knowledge and understanding human anatomy, physiology, pathology, and pathophysiology.
- Perform sonographic procedures and accurately document anatomic and pathologic information according to scanning protocol.
- Abide by and promote the values and ethical standards inherent to the allied health and diagnostic medical imaging professions.
- Demonstrate effective communication skills with patients, families, and members of the healthcare community.
- Provide compassionate patient care and advocate for patient safety and well-being.
- Develop skills for lifelong learning and professional contribution through practice-based research.
