Overview

This Ceramics course at Bard College at Simon's Rock will focus on advanced hand-building techniques and build upon the skills learned in Introduction to Ceramics. A series of assignments will be given that present design challenges encouraging a conceptual approach to learning new techniques.

Learning outcomes

Large scale hand-built sculpture, mold making, slip casting clay and glaze mixing, and kiln firing techniques (electric, gas, wood) will all be introduced in this course.

An essential part of the course consists of questioning every aspect of the object and one’s relationship to it and to oneself.

Through slides, lectures, and films, students will exposed to a broader range of contemporary and historical ceramic art. The class will maintain a blog, and students will learn to photograph their work, write about it, and post blog entries.

An interview with an admission counselor is required of each applicant. We’ll just be getting to know you as a live, talking, thinking person.

Simon’s Rock courses require a strong facility with the English language. Students who do not qualify for one of the English Proficiency exam waivers listed below must present proof of English proficiency by submitting scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), International English Language Testing System (IELTS), Duolingo English Test, or Pearson PTE Academic that are no more than two years old.

Official transcripts, diplomas, and leaving examination scores from secondary and post-secondary schools (in English).

International Students are eligible to receive Simon’s Rock institutional financial aid and scholarships.

Students living abroad, who are not citizens or permanent residents of the United States, will require a student visa to study at Simon's Rock.
