Overview

Bard College at Simon's Rock Literary Studies program is decidedly comparative, allowing students to study British and American literature as well as French, Spanish, German, Russian, Chinese, Arabic, Czech, and other literatures, in the original language or in translation.

Learning outcomes

In keeping with the College’s commitment to interdisciplinary study, students choosing this concentration are encouraged to engage in complementary study in other areas, including Asian studies and gender studies, or fields other than literature.

In the past, students have combined work in literary theory and women’s studies, political theory, and children’s literature, and the history of science with autobiography. The Division’s course offerings each semester represent a wide variety of literary approaches and contexts.

General requirements

An interview with an admission counselor is required of each applicant. We’ll just be getting to know you as a live, talking, thinking person.

Simon’s Rock courses require a strong facility with the English language. Students who do not qualify for one of the English Proficiency exam waivers listed below must present proof of English proficiency by submitting scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), International English Language Testing System (IELTS), Duolingo English Test, or Pearson PTE Academic that are no more than two years old.

Official transcripts, diplomas, and leaving examination scores from secondary and post-secondary schools (in English).

International Students are eligible to receive Simon’s Rock institutional financial aid and scholarships.

Students living abroad, who are not citizens or permanent residents of the United States, will require a student visa to study at Simon's Rock.
