Overview
The field of Sociology at Bard College at Simon's Rock and the study of work as an institution are deeply connected, especially in the aftermath of the Industrial Revolution. This program will selectively draw on this rich history in order to explore major theories, methods for studying work, and debates within the context of the United States.
Learning outcomes
- We will begin with a survey of a number of ways of organizing human effort in society: slavery, indentured servitude, household production, scientific management, service work, and unpaid reproductive labor, to name a few.

General requirements
- An interview with an admission counselor is required of each applicant. We’ll just be getting to know you as a live, talking, thinking person.
- Simon’s Rock courses require a strong facility with the English language. Students who do not qualify for one of the English Proficiency exam waivers listed below must present proof of English proficiency by submitting scores from the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), International English Language Testing System (IELTS), Duolingo English Test, or Pearson PTE Academic that are no more than two years old.
- Official transcripts, diplomas, and leaving examination scores from secondary and post-secondary schools (in English).
- International Students are eligible to receive Simon’s Rock institutional financial aid and scholarships.
- Students living abroad, who are not citizens or permanent residents of the United States, will require a student visa to study at Simon's Rock.
