Spoken by over 220 million people on 5 continents, French is also the official language in over 30 countries. It is a working language of the United Nations, the European Union, UNESCO, NATO, the Red Cross, and the International Olympic Committee.

The French program offered by Lafayette College provides students with the four basic language skills of reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Emphasis is on learning the fundamentals of grammar and on the development of verbal skills through their active use.

At Lafayette College, the French program offers a broad range of affiliations with other Departments and Programs, such as Africana Studies, International Affairs, Government and Law, Medieval, Renaissance, and Early Modern studies, Film and Media Studies, Latin American and Caribbean Studies, Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies.
