Overview
The B.S. in Biochemistry at Florida Gulf Coast University includes 32 hours of core courses in chemistry, biochemistry and sciences and prepares students for direct employment in biomedical, environmental, and defense areas; or, any fields that utilize B.S. level scientists and for entry into biochemistry graduate schools.
Graduates with B.S. in Biochemistry from Florida Gulf Coast University will be able to:
- Demonstrate an understanding of chemical reactivity and the ability to predict products from common reactions.
- Demonstrate an understanding of chemical structure and properties.
- Interpret whether data from chemistry laboratory experiments are accurate and statistically valid, by understanding the errors and limitations inherent in laboratory techniques and instruments.
- Explain the principles of operation for common chemistry laboratory instrumentation, using knowledge of chemical structure and properties and instrument design.
- Possess a broad and fundamental understanding of biology and chemistry with particular focus on how molecules found in biological systems influence the properties of living organisms.
- Be able to locate, evaluate, and communicate scientific information effectively both by written and oral presentation.
- Have the ability to conduct independent scientific investigation and scientific inquiry.
The biochemistry major provides a foundation for acceptance into professional programs and serves as a pre-professional track for pharmacy, dentistry, veterinary, environmental, marine sciences programs. This way, graduates will be prepared for employment at government laboratories, grant-funded university research facilities, industrial laboratories, pharmaceutical laboratories.
The program is also suited for students who wish to teach chemistry at the high school level after graduation but who prefer to study chemistry and biology more in-depth than a traditional education major. Graduates would be qualified to teach chemistry, although additional certification requirements may be necessary.
Graduates will also be prepared for entry into biochemistry master’s and doctoral programs including medical school.
