Overview
The Ceramics programme at Murray State University provides a dynamic environment for students to master the diverse technical and conceptual aspects of clay working. This curriculum balances traditional craftsmanship with contemporary digital innovation to prepare artists for professional practice.
Students are encouraged to explore a broad spectrum of clay applications, ranging from utilitarian vessels to purely sculptural forms. As participants progress through the levels of study, they gain the autonomy to choose a specific focus that aligns with their personal artistic vision and career goals.
The teaching methodology emphasises a blend of hand-building, wheel-throwing, and advanced mould-making techniques.
Why Ceramics at Murray State University?
The institution provides an exceptional 4,700-square-foot studio space, offering students 24-hour access to professional-grade facilities. This environment is designed to foster creativity and independence, particularly for advanced students who are granted individual studio spaces to manage their own artistic production.
Facilities include a dedicated clay and glaze mixing area stocked with over 100 raw materials, alongside specialised equipment for extruding and casting. The centre is equipped with five electric kilns, a salt/soda kiln, and a large gas reduction kiln, allowing for a wide variety of firing processes and finishes.
Innovation is a hallmark of the department, which features two delta 3D clay printers and resources for photographic image transfer. These tools allow students to bridge the gap between ancient craft and cutting-edge technology, ensuring they remain competitive in the evolving landscape of contemporary design.

Many alumni find success in the design sector, applying their knowledge of form and texture to product development and interior styling.
The focus on self-directed assignments in the final years of the course fosters an entrepreneurial mindset.
