Chicano and Latin American Studies (CLAS) is an interdisciplinary department that has been successful in presenting a highly informed, active, and challenging view of the Chicano/Latino experience in the United States and in U.S./Latin American relations.

About

Chicano and Latin American Studies provides an opportunity for a pluralistic exchange of ideas in an interdisciplinary academic setting, where faculty, students, and visiting Chicano and Latin American scholars can share experiences and create a dynamic, intellectual environment. 
The Chicano and Latin American Studies Department is designed to meet the following objectives:

  • to promote an awareness of the historical and cultural roots of Chicanos/Latinos in the United States
  • to enhance an understanding of Latin America
  • to cultivate an appreciation of ethnic and national differences among all people
  • to critically analyze the Chicano and the Latin American experience in terms of significant issues, theories, current problems, and solutions, and
  • to provide students with a set of important professional skills to be utilized as they interact creatively and constructively with Chicano/Latino communities and multicultural society at large.
  • The department emphasizes an interdisciplinary approach to the study of family life, history, politics, culture, and the arts of Chicano and Latin American communities. The courses reflect an integrated approach in providing students with greater knowledge and understanding of the social reality and diversity of Chicanos and Latin Americans.

    Academic Requirements

    1.     Submit an online undergraduate application at CSU Mentor.

    Also, a non-refundable Application Fee of $55 USD for undergraduate application can be paid by credit card. During online application OR mailed in the form of check, money order or wire transfer payable to The California State University, Fresno.

    2.     Official English Proficiency Score Report (Institution Code: 4312)

    Undergraduate: TOEFL - Minimum of 61 iBT (500 PBT with official score report), or

                              IELTS - Minimum of 6.0 Band Score, or
                              PTE Academic - Minimum 49, or
                              ELS Language Centers - Level 112, or
                              FLS International Language School – Level 16, or       
                              TLC The Language Company – Level 9, or
                              UCLA Extension - Level 6
                              Pearson's Test of English - 49

    NOTE: Mail in an unofficial score report along with other required documents.

    3.     Original or certified copies of Academic Credentials with literal English translation.  Any coursework presented after an offer of admission is made will not be considered for credit.

    4.     Financial document (no older than 6 months) from sponsors showing the amount and source of support.

    5.     A copy of the biographic information/photo page in your passport.

    6.     Official admission test score report (ACT or SAT I) - if applicable
