Overview

During the Biology program of Augustana University students are prepared for a wide variety of professional, cultural and vocational opportunities, including graduate study, the medically allied professions and teaching. Present-day biology makes liberal use of chemistry, mathematics and physics as tools, so our biology students acquire a sound background in these basic fields, as well.

Areas of Study

In addition to a comprehensive biology major, students may elect to study additionally in one of two emphasis areas:

  • Cell and molecular biology — This emphasis allows students to explore the emerging understanding of the complicated, yet effective inner workings of cells and systems that make up all organisms. Courses in this area will allow students to master the general mechanisms of how macromolecules and cells interact to support the functions of living things, and thus would be especially helpful for students interested in learning about the molecular and biochemical underpinnings of health and disease. Students will learn how cells function, communicate and make up tissues. In addition, they will explore how we critically evaluate and make new cutting-edge discoveries in this field. This emphasis supports the professional goals of students interested in a career in research or attending graduate programs for health professions, biomedical sciences or in basic research in cell biology, genetics, molecular biology, developmental biology, immunology, microbiology or physiology.
  • Ecology — This emphasis allows students to explore the interactions between organisms and their abiotic environment. Courses in this emphasis have a field-oriented focus, enabling students to learn and explore outside of the confines of the laboratory and will enhance understanding of the diversity of species, patterns of distribution and behavior of organisms, as well as human impacts on natural systems. The emphasis supports the professional goals of students interested in attending graduate school in evolutionary, ecological or organismal biology, or developing a career in environmental, conservation, or resource management sciences.
  • Allied Health -- This emphasis may be of particular interest for students interested in pre-physical therapy, pre-occupational therapy, pre-chiropractic, and pre-optometry. Note that the emphasis does not fulfill all the pre-requisites for these graduate programs. Please refer to the pre-professional program of study for guidelines for admission into specific graduate programs.

English Language Requirements

  • Minimum required score:

    79

The TOEFL iBT ® measures your English-language abilities in an academic setting. The test has four sections (reading, listening, speaking, and writing), each with a score range of 0-30, for a total score range of 0-120.

  • Minimum required score:

    6

The IELTS – or the International English Language Test System – tests your English-language abilities (writing, listening, speaking, and reading) on a scale of 1.00–9.00. The minimum IELTS score requirement refers to which Overall Band Score you received, which is your combined average score. Read more about IELTS.

  • Minimum required score:

    550

The TOEFL®PBT is administered in a paper format and measures your ability to use and understand English in a classroom setting at the college or university level. It accurately measures how well you can listen, read and write in English while performing academic tasks.

Academic Requirements

You need the following GPA score:

Required score: 2.7

Applicants for graduate programs must have the equivalent of a bachelor’s degree with a minimum GPA equivalent to 2.7 on a US 4.0 grading scale. Admitted applicants typically have an undergraduate GPA of or better on a 4.0 scale. No exam grade should be lower than 4.5 (European grade scale) or D (American grade scale).

Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated using the grades that you received in each course, and is determined by the points assigned to each grade (e.g. for the US grading scale from A-F).
