The Department’s philosophy is that it aims to make a difference in the lives of its students so that they can, in turn, make a difference in the lives of other people throughout society.
Through the superb faculty, rich curriculum and vigorous extracurricular programs, the department provides an exceptionally well-rounded education to talented and informed men and women, many of whom go on the pursue graduate and professional degrees.
Students pursuing degrees in either History or Political Science from Fisk University will gain a comprehensive and integrated knowledge of history; the training necessary for more advanced study in history and political science; and the practical knowledge of historical and political developments.

A major in history is excellent preparation for many careers in a variety of fields. Students skilled in research, analysis and writing are attractive to graduate programs, professional programs, businesses, etc. History enables students to examine the human past – through American, African-American, and World History.
Its primary goal of History at Fisk is to: prepare broadly educated men and women for entry into diverse profession careers and public life; to foster the skills that history teaches: analysis, evaluation, and synthesis; to provide students the necessary prerequisites for coherent decision-making in all areas of professional life, especially those useful for careers in international relations, public and corporate administration, and law;· to develop in history students a greater appreciation of a “multicultural world, a pluralistic nation, and a technological society.”
Career options of the history graduate includes teaching at the primary, secondary, or collegiate level is another option for the history graduate. There are also private sector jobs available to history majors.
These opportunities are found at libraries, museums, archives, historical societies, preservation projects, and assorted research facilities.
Recent Graduates with a B.A. in History from Fisk University have received advanced degrees . University of Washington, Vanderbilt, Howard, Temple universities among others and made successful careers as college professors, administrators and museologists.The History Department’s goals are:

Students graduating with a Bachelor of Arts degree in history will
- 1. Be able to research historical problems and analyze their historical elements
- 2. Demonstrate the ability to develop interpretive theses to explain and synthesize evidence
- 3. Demonstrate the ability to effectively communicate the conclusion of their studies to a general audience
- 4. Be able to analyze the impact of changes over time

- A completed application for admission.
- Official ACT or SAT scores.
- All official transcripts submitted must be evaluated course-by-course by an outside evaluation agency at the applicant's expense.
