Overview

Social Science at Providence College is built on a solid foundation of social theory and research methods. Students then build upon this common foundation by choosing courses from any three of seven social science disciplines: anthropology, economics, history, linguistics, political science, psychology, and sociology.

The major in social science requires that students complete a minimum of 10 courses from a combination of any three of the seven social science disciplines, depending on the student’s interests and goals. These 10 courses must include a research methods course, a theory course, and the social science capstone seminar, which allows students to integrate the material learned across the chosen disciplines — with an emphasis on how to conduct and evaluate social scientific investigation and explanation.

Students plan their own course of study in consultation with the director of the program in order to both meet their interests and to fulfill the requirements of the major, and classes are chosen strategically to achieve both breadth of subject matter and depth of study.
