Why Study History and Classics at Providence College? Passionate faculty. Incredible students. These are essential ingredients of the best history departments.

Our faculty members are internationally recognized scholars and passionate educators. Students of History and Classics at Providence College, inside the classroom and beyond it, are captivated by the events and cultures that have shaped our world. They have gone on to become educators and lawyers, CEOs and community organizers, diplomats and peacemakers.

Away from the classroom, internships and our history club bring lessons to life — as does our annual Maymester course, which has taken students to Germany, Poland, Hungary, England, Ireland, Spain, Portugal, and Japan in the past five years. So, whether you want to learn about our world in the classroom or experience it in person, we want you to take the journey with us.

Key facts:

History majors learn to analyze and assess evidence, raise important questions, communicate ideas clearly, and develop sound arguments with excellent evidence. All of these skills are highly marketable and sought after in a range of professional enterprises.

Studying the wellspring of Western thinking gives them a wider perspective and deeper understanding of the problems and opportunities that confront modern society. The study of the classics teaches analytical thinking, close attention to detail, and the ability to see the big picture and small details at the same time.
