Overview

University of Central Missouri English majors study topics ranging from medieval romances to modern dystopias; from Jane Austen’s England to Langston Hughes’ Harlem; from Hamlet to Huckleberry Finn.

Our majors also do intensive work in writing and research that will serve them well in a twenty-first century economy where these skills are much in demand. It is a major rooted in the challenges and pleasures of reading and thinking.

Careers for English Majors

  • With the training they receive in writing, critical thinking, and literature, UCM English majors are able to thrive in a number of careers. Recent UCM English alums are now working in careers in publishing, editing, public relations, law, advertising, web writing, entertainment, and technical writing and research.
  • The UCM English major can also pave the way to academia. In Fall 2017, recent alums were admitted to prestigious PhD programs at the University of Wisconsin and the University of Kansas—in both cases with fellowships and assistantships to cover the cost of graduate school.
  • Many English majors pair their degree with minors like technical writing, creative writing, or business to make themselves even more competitive on the job market.
