What You'll Study

The Special Education program of Lock Haven University allows you the opportunity to teach students with disabilities in grades PreK-12. Within this degree program, you will learn knowledge, skills, and dispositions to teach across various grade levels and disability areas. Areas of expertise that will be covered in this major include:

  • Knowledge of special education law and regulations
  • Etiology and eligibility of various disabilities
  • Accommodations and modifications to meet diverse learning needs
  • Specific teaching strategies to enhance the academic, social, and functional growth of students with disabilities

Program Highlights

Student Teaching: When pre-service candidates enter their  senior year, they culminate their degree with a semester long student teaching experience, providing placements in both elementary  and secondary settings.  For dual majors in SPEC and PreK-4,  student teachers will have one placement in regular education (PreK-4) and one placement in special educatioon (7-12).

Careers: There remains a growing demand for special education teachers, particularly in rural and inner city school districts. According to the 2014 Bureau of Labor and Statistics, the overall demand will continue to be driven by increasing enrollment and a continued need for special education services.

    The TOEFL®PBT is administered in a paper format and measures your ability to use and understand English in a classroom setting at the college or university level. It accurately measures how well you can listen, read and write in English while performing academic tasks.

Academic Requirements

You need the following GPA score:

Required score: 3.2

Applicants for graduate programs must have the equivalent of a bachelor’s degree with a minimum GPA equivalent to 3.2 on a US 4.0 grading scale. Admitted applicants typically have an undergraduate GPA of or better on a 4.0 scale. No exam grade should be lower than 4.5 (European grade scale) or D (American grade scale).

Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated using the grades that you received in each course, and is determined by the points assigned to each grade (e.g. for the US grading scale from A-F).

General Requirements

  • Complete the online application.
  • A non-refundable application fee of $25.00 (twenty five dollars U.S.) must be paid.
  • Submit official, English-translated copies of all secondary course work completed, including subjects listed and marks earned, secondary school certificates, diplomas and examinations results from all secondary, post-secondary, and university and/or professional schools.
  • All non-native speakers of English must submit an official language score report. To be considered "official," the scores must be sent directly from the sending institution (TOEFL, IELTS, etc.).
