Students of mathematics at Eastern enjoy an outstanding learning environment. The Department of Mathematics and Computer Science offers a large number of courses, taught in small classes (maximum class size is 35, with most much smaller), by an exceptionally caring, dedicated, enthusiastic, and knowledgeable faculty.

Overview

The department offers three challenging and rewarding undergraduate majors (as well as two graduate degrees).

The B.A. in Mathematics, has traditionally prepared students for advanced degrees, both in mathematics and in other fields such as medicine, law, business, and science. Students who are preparing for careers in industry or government often choose this major. They combine selected mathematics courses with courses in business, data processing, economics, physics, or chemistry, for example to provide the background for a wide range of careers.

General Requirements

  1. Application for Admission
  2. Official records (transcripts or mark sheets) beginning with secondary school. Transcripts must bear the seal and signature of the appropriate school official, and be accompanied by an official English translation if necessary. A minimum grade point average of a 2.0 on a 4.0 scale is required. All transcripts become property of this University. Transfer students are strongly encouraged to submit course descriptions or syllabi as this information will greatly expedite the transfer process.
  3. English Language Proficiency Requirement: Official TOEFL, IELTS, STEP EIKEN, Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB), or iTEP Academic Plus Examination mailed directly from the respective testing service. The school code for Eastern Illinois University is 1199. Test results are valid for two years only. Required scores are listed here. Please note, conditional admission is possible for students who have not met the English requirement.
