The Department of Communication Studies offers a Bachelor of Arts degree with options in corporate communication, interpersonal communication, mass communication and prepares students to be effective and ethical communicators in their professional, relational, and cultural roles. In the mass communication option, students select a concentration in broadcast news or electronic media production.

Overview

Communication is identified as one of the top skills required in any organization. This option provides students with the knowledge, values, perspectives and skills necessary to understand the roles, functions, strategies, and management of positions within organizations with high communication demands.

Communication studies majors can select from several different tracks of study:

Corporate Communication OptionCommunication is identified as one of the top skills required in any organization. This option provides students with the knowledge, skill, and perspectives to work in positions with high communication demands.Interpersonal Communication Option

Designed for students interested in developing knowledge and skills that facilitate effective communication in personal, professional, and group contexts.

Graduates with this option are particularly well-prepared to work with individuals and groups from varying backgrounds, with differing needs and interests, and where the goals of communication are to resolve problems or disputes.

Mass Communication Option: Broadcast News Concentration

Designed for students interested in a career in radio/TV news, including anchors, writers, reporters, producers, videographers, weather and sports anchors.

Mass Communication Option: Electronic Media Production

Designed for students interested in learning the theories and techniques of radio and TV broadcasting, as well as non-broadcast applications. Emphasis is on non-news content. Students may select from four different emphases:

  • Alternative Media Arts Emphasis: Designed for students interested in video production, but not the traditional TV industry. May include independent or internet video production.
  • Audio Emphasis: Designed for students interested radio broadcasting or audio production.
  • Multimedia Emphasis: Teaches students to produce content for the internet, including social networking.
  • Video Emphasis: Designed for students who would like to work in the television industry or non-broadcast video production.

General Requirements

  1. Application for Admission
  2. Official records (transcripts or mark sheets) beginning with secondary school. Transcripts must bear the seal and signature of the appropriate school official, and be accompanied by an official English translation if necessary. A minimum grade point average of a 2.0 on a 4.0 scale is required. All transcripts become property of this University. Transfer students are strongly encouraged to submit course descriptions or syllabi as this information will greatly expedite the transfer process.
  3. English Language Proficiency Requirement: Official TOEFL, IELTS, STEP EIKEN, Michigan English Language Assessment Battery (MELAB), or iTEP Academic Plus Examination mailed directly from the respective testing service. The school code for Eastern Illinois University is 1199. Test results are valid for two years only. Required scores are listed here. Please note, conditional admission is possible for students who have not met the English requirement.

  5. Non-refundable application fee of $30.00 U.S. in the form of a check, certified check or money order made payable to Eastern Illinois University.
