Overview

Philosophy, one of the oldest and broadest disciplines, is a living intellectual enterprise that belongs at the heart of a liberal arts education. From the Greek, philosophia means 'love of wisdom,' and in that sense of the term, Socrates famously said that philosophy proved necessary for leading 'the examined life.' From its ancient origins to our own times, philosophy has always guided our thinking about difficult and controversial issues by allowing us to question assumptions, to examine arguments, and to think clearly and creatively about the most fundamental questions.

On Learning Goals

The Philosophy program at Middlebury College seeks to promote the following among students:

The ability to recognize, analyze, and evaluate structures of arguments, e.g., by identifying the key assumptions, theses, and justifications for a given position
The ability to compare views, to formulate arguments, and to communicate clearly in speech and writing, particularly in the service of creative and critical problem-solving
Familiarity with the central figures and texts in the history of philosophy, both ancient and modern
Broad acquaintance with, and thoughtful reflection upon, contemporary philosophical topics and practices
The capacity for independent research and critical inquiry
The ability to engage in discussion of alternative positions with intellectual honesty and respect

General requirements

Middlebury admissions requires an application essay. You’ll find possible essay prompts on the Common Application website. The Middlebury application does not require a supplemental essay.
Allow ample time for teachers to complete their recommendations online by the deadline.
Your counselor will complete the form online and return it to Middlebury with your 9th–11th grade transcripts.
If our nonrefundable $75 application fee presents a barrier for you, we encourage you to apply using a fee waiver.
Middlebury accepts a number of English proficiency tests for students whose first language is not English or whose secondary education has been at a school where English is not the primary language of instruction.
If you choose to submit standardized test scores, please request that testing services or your guidance department submit scores directly to Middlebury College.
You will be able to upload additional materials directly to your student portal.
