Creative Writing from Middlebury College provides a balance between offering constructive criticism and providing support for student effort. In addition to students critiquing each other’s writing, exemplary works of literature are closely examined, such models being crucial to any writer’s development. The close connection between the Creative Writing Program and the English and American Literatures Department encourages students to be good analytic readers as part of their training to become complex and substantive writers.

General requirements

Middlebury admissions requires an application essay. You’ll find possible essay prompts on the Common Application website. The Middlebury application does not require a supplemental essay.
Allow ample time for teachers to complete their recommendations online by the deadline.
Your counselor will complete the form online and return it to Middlebury with your 9th–11th grade transcripts.
If our nonrefundable $75 application fee presents a barrier for you, we encourage you to apply using a fee waiver.
Middlebury accepts a number of English proficiency tests for students whose first language is not English or whose secondary education has been at a school where English is not the primary language of instruction.
If you choose to submit standardized test scores, please request that testing services or your guidance department submit scores directly to Middlebury College.
You will be able to upload additional materials directly to your student portal.
