Overview

Recent graduates of the Music - Theory and Composition program offered at Eastern Kentucky University have been accepted into graduate programs at: Florida State University, Louisiana State University, Michigan State University, Middle Tennessee State University, University of Kentucky and University of Louisville. In addition, several students have pursued careers in church music and studio teaching.

Theory and Composition students take six semesters of private study in composition, where they learn to compose music in a variety of styles for both instruments and voices. Students also attend the EKU Composers Forum and have the opportunity to have their music performed at the annual student composers recital.

Theory and Composition students will acquire fluency in computer-based notation, recording technology and keyboard skills. Composition majors whose primary instrument is not piano will be required to take two addition semesters of private keyboard study.

Curriculum

Composition lessons begin the second year of the undergraduate sequence. Students who are interested in composition should schedule an interview with Dr. Couvillon either before or during their freshman year to discuss their goals and assess their experience level. Students who complete this interview process will be allowed to register for MUS 283, Beginning Composition.

Submit a copy of your valid passport
Submit transcripts:

Complete secondary school records reflecting a cumulative grade of 75% (2.5 GPA equivalent) or higher.

Submit an official copy of your high school diploma or graduation certificate (if applicable).
Provide a declaration of finances - A Certificate of Eligibility (I-20 or DS-2019) will not be authorized until financial verification is received. Providing false information may jeopardize visa status and result in the University revoking acceptance. U.S. immigration law requires international students to prove they have funds available for their educational and living expenses.
