Overview

The majors of the Music Education program offered at Eastern Kentucky University have numerous outlets to engage in teaching music prior to their student teaching experience. These experiences give Eastern graduates a competitive edge in the job market, while also allowing them opportunities for professional networking within their field of study. Some examples of our hands-on curriculum include:

Engagement in the Clinical Educator program. In this program, pre-service undergraduate teachers are placed with partnering local P-12 schools where EKU students observe, tutor and instruct young musicians on a weekly basis

Opportunities to engage with the implementation of large scale educational events such as the EKU Middle School Honors Band, and the EKU High School Honors Band

Experiences with EKU partnerships, including: Foster Music Camp, Model Laboratory School, & Foster Academy of Musical Excellence (F.A.M.E.)

Why the Music Education program offered by Eastern Kentucky University?

Main campus facilities include an excellent music technology lab with 24 iMac computer stations, recording and studio engineering software and equipment, a keyboard lab, an extensive music library, three concert halls, and numerous practice rooms. Music students in ensembles will have the opportunity to perform in the EKU Center for the Arts, one of the best such facilities in the area.

The School of Music presents over 100 concerts annually, including faculty concerts and recitals, ensemble performances, master classes, and performances and clinics by guest artists.

Music majors are welcome and encouraged to participate in campus organizations like the national music fraternity; American String Teachers Association, NAfME; Choral Directors Association; the Music Industry Organization, which helps EKU students gain experience in various fields of the music industry; the Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia Fraternity for men; and the Sigma Alpha Iota Fraternity for women.

The EKU School of Music and Office of International study offers exciting opportunities for music students to study abroad in locations such as Salburg, Austria, and Florence, Italy.

Fill out the free online application. Students must indicate the major they wish to pursue in order for an I-20 to be issued.
Submit a copy of your valid passport
Submit transcripts:

Complete secondary school records reflecting a cumulative grade of 75% (2.5 GPA equivalent) or higher.

Submit an official copy of your high school diploma or graduation certificate (if applicable).
Provide a declaration of finances - A Certificate of Eligibility (I-20 or DS-2019) will not be authorized until financial verification is received. Providing false information may jeopardize visa status and result in the University revoking acceptance. U.S. immigration law requires international students to prove they have funds available for their educational and living expenses.
