The Valdosta State Difference

Students in the Middle Grades Education program of Valdosta State University enjoy small classes, have meaningful interactions with faculty members and receive crucial training in various technologies. The department maintains collaborative partnerships with public schools, communities and post-secondary institutions in South Georgia, enabling students to gain invaluable experience in middle grades classrooms. Students also have the opportunity to participate in the People to People International program, a unique initiative in which students travel to Washington, D.C., and abroad to hone their education skills while interacting with students from diverse cultural backgrounds. Student groups on campus include the Student Professional Association of Georgia Educators and Kappa Delta Pi, an education honor society.

The Valdosta State middle grades education undergraduate curriculum is designed to create versatile, well-rounded educators who can teach in a number of areas. Students must choose two areas of study from the following concentrations: language arts, social studies, mathematics or science. Technology is an important part of the middle grades education curriculum, and students take several classes that introduce them to high-tech teaching tools such as iPods and iPads. Students are required to spend a minimum of 900 hours in a classroom setting. Upon graduation, students are prepared to embark on careers as middle grades educators.

  • Submit official transcripts from high school and/or all college(s) attended; only sealed, official academic records will be accepted
  • A completed Certificate of Finances statement guaranteeing that the student will have a minimum of $36,124.00 (for nine months) available for personal and educational expenses
  • Completed medical form. VSU requires that prior to registration all students present proof of two vaccines for measles and on for mumps and rubella; a tetanus booster within the last ten years; proof of disease or immunization for varicella (chicken pox); and, if under the age of 19 at time of enrollment, proof of hepatitis B series immunization
  • All international students must purchase the VSU medical insurance plan for students to cover the cost of medical treatment while in the United States
  • A copy of the student's passport/visa must be emailed to the Office of Admissions
