Students who wish to pursue Political Science Major with Teacher Certification in Social Studies (Preschool-Grade 12)  must apply to and be admitted to the Teacher Education Program AT Montclair State University. Please visit the Teacher Education Program website for the required professional sequence of courses and other important Program requirements, guidelines, and procedures. Students also are strongly advised to review the Teacher Education Program Handbook. The course SOSC 401 is the departmental requirement.

The social studies teacher is expected to have a broad understanding of the cultural and environmental factors which shape the individual and society. To meet the approved program for certification in social studies, course work is required in each of the following:

  • anthropology,
  • economics,
  • geography,
  • history,
  • political science and
  • sociology.

Academic Requirements

You need the following GPA score:

Required score: 3
Recommended score: 3.25

Applicants for graduate programs must have the equivalent of a bachelor’s degree with a minimum GPA equivalent to 3 on a US 4.0 grading scale. Admitted applicants typically have an undergraduate GPA of 3.25 or better on a 4.0 scale. No exam grade should be lower than 4.5 (European grade scale) or D (American grade scale).

Your GPA (Grade Point Average) is calculated using the grades that you received in each course, and is determined by the points assigned to each grade (e.g. for the US grading scale from A-F).

General Requirements

A minimum of 120 credits of coursework is required for the baccalaureate degree with a minimum 3.0 overall GPA; however more than 120 credits may be required depending upon the major field of study.  Major GPA requirements differ depending on field of study.
