Once admitted to the Bachelor of Social Work Program at Northern Kentucky University, students study human behavior, research, social work practice, and social welfare policy. An emphasis is placed on utilizing critical thinking skills in work with individuals, families, groups, and communities.
Bachelor of Social Work majors gain valuable professional experience in their field placement. Field placement consists of spending 400 hours in a community-based agency in the final semester of the BSW curriculum. Placements are facilitated in the Northern Kentucky and greater Cincinnati area. However, students may also apply to participate in placements beyond the immediate geographical region.
Social Work has never been in greater demand than it is today. Employment of social workers is expected to increase much faster than all other occupations through 2016 (BLS, 2008).
There are a wide variety of jobs for social workers, such as school social work, hospitals, aging, child welfare, mental health, substance abuse, and family services. A career in social work is one with great job mobility and opportunities. A Bachelor of Social Work (BSW) prepares graduates for licensure and a Master of Social degree (MSW), increasing employment and salary opportunities.
Our NKU Social Work programs are accredited by the Council on Social Work Education (CSWE).
